Series II: Stanclift Family
Scope and Contents
Collection contains correspondence, autograph albums,estate material, mortgage papers, biographical material, photographs collected by Dorothy DeWitt Wilkinson.
Correspondence is divided into two series, the Tyler family and the Stanclift family. The Tyler family correspondence consists of letters between of Tyler family women. Sarah Ann Tyler frequently wrote to her daughters and they to her. The sisters, Minnie, Pauline, Carrie, and Nell also wrote to each other. Later, Pauline carried on correspondence with Minnie’s daughters, Maude DeWitt and Dorothy DeWitt Wilkinson. The letters are interesting for their information about daily life, women’s health issues, and migration during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Stanclift correspondence consists of letters written to an aunt. The families were related through Dorothy DeWitt Wilkinson’s father, William Lowe DeWitt, who was the son of Sarah Eliza Stanclift and Dr. George Sebury DeWitt and who married Minnie Almeda Tyler.
