Biographical Sketch

William Thomas Ramsey was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on October 16, 1842. His family moved to Greenbriar County around 1846 in what would become West Virginia following the Civil War. Ramsey enlisted in the confederate army on May 1, 1862. His Company was captured and he was in the Prisoner Camp at Elmira, NY, from which he was paroled May 11, 1865. Both parents had died by the time he returned to West Virginia, leaving eight children younger than Ramsey. Because it was difficult for a Confederate veteran to live in West Virginia following the war, he moved to Kansas (Butler county) and later to Stillwater in the land run of 1889 and appears in the Census of 1890. In April, 1891, he was elected as a Trustee of the Village of Stillwater, but was defeated for reelection in May of that year by Charles W. McGraw. He was elected to the Stillwater Board of Education in 1893. He may have been Mayor of Stillwater at one time for May 1898 to May 1899, and have donated land to the College. Ramsey died May 31, 1913, and is buried in Ripley, Oklahoma.
