Scope and Contents

Collection contains the Bennett Memorial Chapel register, which was placed in "" Memory of Frederick Bentner Drummond '14 by Members of his Family."" The book contains autographs and notes from the many visitors to the Chapel over the years. A second book lists those persons who were involved in fundraising efforts to help found the Chapel.

Administrative History

According to the Student Union's site, the Bennett Memorial Chapel was "built on the site of the former president's home, is named for Dr. Henry G. Bennett, president of OSU from 1928-51. He was the first director of America's Point Four Program, established to provide technical assistance to nations around the world. The Point Four Program was a forerunner of the present U.S. Agency for International Development. Bennett and his wife were killed in a tragic airplane crash in Iran in 1951, while he was serving as administrator on this program.

"Bennett proposed in 1936 that a chapel be built as a war memorial. Upon his death in 1951, friends organized a foundation to complete the chapel plan. In 1957, the chapel was dedicated in honor of Bennett, his wife and University students who gave their lives in World Wars I and II. The chapel is non-denominational and is available for booking by students, faculty, staff and the general public. It is located on the northwest corner of the intersection of University Avenue and Hester Street."
