Scope and Contents

Collection contains publications, administrative files, personal files, correspondence, and resource materials from Dr. Michael Smolen. The materials in this collection cover water quality education, protection, and preservation. A large portion of the collection is devoted to resource materials. Research and projects dealing with the Illinois River in Oklahoma and Arkansas are an important part of the collection. There are many resources devoted to educating the public on the necessity to care for water and how to help with protecting the environment. Major topics include animal waste, pesticides, riparian protection and wellhead protection among many related subjects. Information on any topic will be found throughout the collection from administrative files through the numerous publications. A strong emphasis is placed on education through 4-H, Blue Thumb, workshops for farmers, ranchers, and national conferences.

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Smolen is currently a Professor, retired, from the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department, and serves as the Water Quality Coordinator for the Division of Agricultural Science and Natural Resources, at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Smolen holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of Rochester, M.S. from the University of Tennessee, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from Virginia Tech. Dr. Smolen has conducted field and modeling studies of cropland runoff, animal waste management, stormwater management, and ground water protection. His current research interests are water policy, water quality, and watershed management. Dr. Smolen has received numerous honors and awards, and is widely published in the fields of agricultural engineering, nonpoint source protection, water quality, and pollution prevention. Dr. Smolen was active in the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering and related organizations. Smolen received numerous grants for research and extension in the field of water quality during his twenty years at Oklahoma State University.
