Administrative History

Fifty-seven Oklahomans were recorded for the Linguistic Atlas of Oklahoma (LAO) between 1959-1963. The LAO's Director was William R. Van Riper, with later work being completed by Raven I. McDavid, Jr., Bruce Southard, and Dennis Preston.

The LAO is a part of The Linguistic Atlas Project (LAP), which began in 1929. The LAP "consists of a set of survey research projects about the words and pronunciation of everyday American English, the largest project of its kind in the country."
