Scope and Contents

Collection contains books from Dr. Habiby's personal library which were sent to Main; 2 gold rimmed porcelain collectible plates from King Hussein of Jordan (each with a crest, one multicolored and one green), Silver Jubilee, 1977. These plates were given by the King's household to embassies and Dr. Habiby was at the embassy. These were never available to the public. This may have been given in to Dr. Habiby in Cairo. The plates have Arabic and English inscriptions reading: "H.M.Hussein's Silver Jubilee, 1977." Collection also contains monographs written by participants in the Coloquio Internacional sobre el Pensamiento de Muammar al-Gaddafi (El Libro Verde)--Madrid. [International Colloquium on the Thoughts of Muammar al-Gaddafi (The Green Book)].

BIopgraphical Sketch

Raymond Habiby (November 11, 1921- ) was born in Cairo, Egypt. He received his Bachelor's from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, in 1941. He earned a law degree from the Law School in Jerusalem and then worked as an attorney in Haifa, Palestine from 1946-1948. During that time, he was also the supervising editor of the Egyptian Gazette. Habiby became a refugee in 1948 when the Israeli state was founded. He re-established himself in Egypt, using the communication skills he learned during World War II to continue his work as a journalist. He served as a political analyst for the U.S. Embassy in Cairo from 1950-1961.

Habiby then moved to the U.S. in 1963, where he earned his M.A.P.A. and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1965. He began teaching at Oklahoma State University in 1965. In 1988, he became a Professor Emeritus from the Department of Political Science.

Habiby married Afaaf Habiby in Stillwater, OK on December 20, 1969. Mrs. Habiby passed away in 2002; she currently has a scholarship in her name at Oklahoma State University. Their daughter, Margot Magda Habiby, was born in 1971. She currently works for Blooming News in Dallas, Texas.
