Scope and Contents

Collection contains 78 photographs, 13 handwritten correspondence, Christmas Dinner Menu for Company "F" 2nd Battalion U.S. Engineers, Vancouver Barracks, Washington, one booklet, " The Second Division: Syllabi of the histories of regiments and separate organizations, Coblenzer Volkszeitung, Coblenz, Germany, [G.O 64] Ninth Infantry sheet, pg. 63 (loose sheet of paper).

Most of the photographs feature the 2nd Division Engineers, of which John Hayes White was a member, and were taken during WWI. The photograph subjects include WWI, the Philippines, Cuba, and portraits of White as a soldier and later, with his wife.

Biographical Sketch

John Hayes White (born 1876), who preferred to go by Hayes White, was a Quartermaster Sergeant with the 2nd Division Engineers during WWI. Early in his military career, White served with the Company H, 18th Infantry in 1900, and in 1906, was part of Company E, 27th Infantry. Sometime between 1906 and 1912, he joined the 2nd Engineers, becoming a Quartermaster Sergeant. An Oklahoma native, White spent his military career from 1900-1921 serving in Cuba, the United States, Mexico, the Philippines, and France, the latter of which he was stationed in during WWI. During the war, he was wounded in the face, suffering an injury to his eyebrow. He recuperated in a hospital in Paris. He later married, but had no children.
