Collection contains Newsom’s handwritten notes for his research, photocopies of research material, copies of his newspaper articles, photographs, microfilm of newspapers, copy negatives and many other types of film. The books in the collection concern the history of Oklahoma. Only one of his books is included.

The collection is open for research use. Biographical Sketch

Dr. Durward Earl Newsom was born January 19, 1919 in Drumright, Oklahoma and died in Stillwater, Oklahoma, May 15, 2013. Newsom began his journalism career in high school at Drumright High School. His first job was with the Drumright Journal where he went on to become editor and manager. Newsom enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserve during WWII and was stationed in Texas and California. He went on the serve as a Congressional aide to Lyle H. Boren. He received his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma OAMC and a doctorate. He taught journalism at Texas A&M College and University of Maryland where he retired in 1979. Newsom received many awards during his journalism career. He began writing books on his return to Stillwater at age 62. He wrote 10 books on Oklahoma history.
