Biographical Sketch

Mary E. Jones Parrish collected first hand accounts and photographs of the Tulsa race massacre and published them privately as her book, Events of the Tulsa Disaster, in 1922. She attended the Rochester Business Institute in Rochester, NY, where she was a student in the regular day school shorthand department. She began a Natural Education school in McAlester, Oklahoma, before setting up a Natural Education school in the Woods building on North Greenwood St. in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

She and her daughter, Florence Mary, were forced to flee their home in Greenwood during the massacre. After the massacre, Parrish was hired by the Inter-Racial Committee to report on what happened. The result was her book, Events of the Tulsa Disaster.
