Administrative History

"Richard Rawlinson (1690-1755), non-juring bishop, antiquary, and book-collector extraordinary, sought to 'provide for posterity, without regard to the ungrateful age' by preserving from destruction whatever he thought of interest. Copperplates were originally for Rawlinson simply a means of making his collections avaiable to other scholars, as photographs or photocopies would be used today. However, he soon began to collect them for their own sake, and became well-known as a purchaser of sets of old plates which had been used for illustrating books, which were often sold by weight for small sums of money, and of miscellaneous quantities of plates disposed of by booksellers. As a result the collection is remarkably diverse in subject matter, ranging from maps to invitations, views to advertisements.

In his will, Rawlinson bequeathed the complete collection to the University of Oxford, 'to be by them worked off into one volume, and the impressions to be sold for their use and benefit.' The volume was never produced.

Some copperplates have been added to the collection since Rawlinson's death--the portrait of Dr. Price, for example." (text from the back of the print)

John Price (1735-1813) was appointed Bodley's Librarian in 1768 and held the post until his death in 1813. He graduated from Jesus College, Oxford, with his BA in 1757 and his MA in 1760. He was ordained in 1760. More information on Price can be found in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, here: http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/22757
