Biographical Sketch

Abbie Hoffman (November 30, 1936-April 12, 1989) was a political and social activist who co-founded the Youth International Party, known as the Yippies. For their role in the protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, Lee Weiner, and Bobby Seale were tried on charges of conspiracy and inciting a riot. This group was known as the "Chicago Eight;" once Seale's charges were prosecuted separately, they became known as the "Chicago Seven."

Hoffman's planned appearance at Oklahoma State University was delayed due to the university's Board of Regents' policy to ban speakers on cmapus by invoking Oklahoma's "Speaker Ban Bill." OSU students sued in federal court to keep the university from using the bill and Regent's speaker's policy to prevent Hoffman and other speakers from speaking on campus. However, in late 1970, the Regents approved a new speaker's policy, and, ironically, Hoffman was permitted to speak on campus under the new policy. The policy went into effect before the students' suit was heard in court.

Hoffman came and spoke at OSU in Gallagher Hall on April 28, 1971 to a crowd of 2,500 students.
