McDavid, Jr., Bruce Southard, and Dennis Preston. The LAO is a part of The Linguistic Atlas Project (LAP), which began in 1929. The LAP "consists of a set of survey research projects about the words and pronunciation of everyday American English, the largest project of its kind in the country."
