Collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, offprints, photographs, research material, and reports collected by W. David Baird. Subjects include Baird’s research on Native Americans, medicine in Arkansas, and Peter Pitchlynn. Biographical Sketch

William David Baird (b. July 8, 1939, Edmond, OK) received his AA from George Washington University (1959), BA from Central (OK) State University (1961), and his MA and PhD from the University of Oklahoma (1965, 1969). He served as assistant to Congressman John Jarman from 1957-1964. He joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas (1968-1978) and then moved to the history department at Oklahoma State University in 1978 as chairman. He stepped down from department head in 1984, and later joined the faculty at Pepperdine (Malibu, CA) as Howard A. White Professor of History in 1988. Also in 1988, he was elected president of Phi Alpha Theta. Baird’s research interests include Native Americans and Western history. His publications include books on Peter Pitchlynn (1968, 1972), the Quapaw Indians (1975, 1980, 1989), nineteenth-century medicine (1977, 1979), and Chief G.W. Grayson (1988). While at OSU, Baird served as state coordinator for History Day from 1980 to 1988, and helped coordinate the Southwest Cultural Heritage Festival in 1980 through 1983.

Will Rogers Project material was removed to 83-005. National History Day material was removed and accessioned as 97-062. Southwest Cultural Heritage Festival material was removed and accessioned as 97-061. History Department material was removed to 96-107.

Confidential material such as student evaluations, student papers, grades, etc. was removed from collection.

Duplicates, other publications, and ephemeral material was removed from collection. Note: correspondence files have not been fully weeded. Confidential material has been removed but remaining material has not been evaluated.
