Biographical Sketch

John Bright, an All-American of the Drake University football team, was the first black athlete to play against Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater. At that time, Oklahoma legislature held it to be illegal for blacks and whites to attend college together. Bright received national attention following a possibly racial incident during the OAMC-Drake game October 20, 1951 in which Bright’s jaw was broken. Bright later played for the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos, was a coach and administrator in the Edmonton public school system, and was posthumously inducted into the College Football Hall-of-Fame.
