The Centennial Histories series was commissioned to celebrate Oklahoma State University's Centennial by documenting its first 100 years.

Biographical Sketch

LeRoy Henry Fischer (1917-2014) was born on May 19, 1917 in Hoffman, Illinois to Dr. Andrew LeRoy Fischer and Effie Risby Fischer.

LeRoy graduated from Centralia, Illinois High School and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. After receiving his doctorate, he immediately joined the U.S. Army Signal Corps during WWII. He was a crypto-anaylst for Operation Ultra Secret and decoded German Enigma messages at Bletchley Park, England for over two years.

After the war, he taught at Ithaca College in New York before coming to Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) in 1946. He taught at OSU for 38 years as a Professor in the Department of History, specializing in American History and the Civil War in Indian Territory.

He married Martha Gwendolyn Anderson in Stanton, Iowa, on June 20, 1948. The Fischers had three children.
