Scope and Contents

Collection contains samples of exams, memorabilia such as catalogs, lists, written messages, and memoirs, magazines and ledgers that were placed as part of a historic packet for Oklahoma A&M College/Oklahoma State University. The three original "Record Books" prepared by B.B. Chapman's history class in 1941 are also a part of this collection.

The collection is open for research use. Administrative History

The Historic Packet was assembled by Dr. Berlin B. Chapman’s history class to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (OAMC) in 1941. The materials were selected to provide a profile of the institution and world events at the time of the anniversary. The packet's contents were sealed in a time capsule and placed in a wall in the lobby of the Edmon Low Library when it was constructed in 1951. It was removed from the wall during the centennial anniversary of Oklahoma State University in 1990, and the contents transferred to Special Collections and University Archives.

A banquet was held on December 15, 1941 to celebrate the college's fiftieth anniversary. Those attending were asked to compose messages to be read when the Historic Packet was opened. These messages, along with other memorabilia, were sealed in a separate metal box labeled "Secrets of the Century" and placed in the Historic Packet. The contents of the "Secrets of the Century" box are in Box 4 of this collection. The messages, alphabetized by signee, are in boxes 8 & 9. There is an index by signees and addressees in a database (V:\indx\Time capsule secrets).
