Administrative History

Initiated by A.C. Magruder (1867-1924), professor of agriculture at Oklahoma A&M College (OAMC) (1891-1895), the Magruder medals were gold medals awarded for literary achievement at OAMC. The first two medals were awarded in freshman contests of declamation, and the third was given for best oration written and delivered by a junior on an agricultural or scientific subject. Kate Neal won the first medal in 1893, George W. Bowers the second in 1894, and Arthur W. Adams won the third medal in 1895. B.B. Chapman was instrumental in securing the medals for OSU which are currently displayed in the Jessie Thatcher Bost room, Edmon Low Library, Special Collections and University Archives (4/95).
