Marion Moss Diary Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 1992-076

Scope and Contents

Collection contains Marion Moss' diary and partially finished contemporary transcriptions. The diary, written in a ledger, includes rosters of Moss’s military regiment and entries about life as a soldier during the Civil War. This version was re-copied by Moss’s son in 1898. The title page bears the following “When you Borrow this Book always Return according to Promise to J. M. Levy.” The following list appears under this inscription: “General Anderson, General Simons(?), General Henderson, General Thomas, Dr. H. J. Eckenrode, Richmond, Va.” Initials follow the general’s names, perhaps confirming the return of the diary. Pages are both numbered and unnumbered. The first five leaves contain a sketchy table of contents. Muster rolls for Company H. 3rd Georgia Regiment at Camp Hardship, Virginia begin on leaf six. Dates of death and promotions for men are also listed. The diary begins on page 20. This note appears on the top of the page: “This is as I saw it and kept dates. [I]t may be different as others saw it. M Moss.” Subjects include foraging for food, the weather, illnesses, fellow soldiers, leaves, and battles, including one between the Monitor and the Merrimac.

Contemporary transcriptions are also included in this collection. Original, edited, and final versions are arranged by years.
