Scope and Contents

Collection contains annual Reports, pamphlets, newsletters, and publications of the department and departmental faculty of the Oklahoma State University Dept. of Botany. The Oklahoma A&M College (OAMC) Bulletins in the collection were published by Arts and Sciences and written by Botany faculty members. Collection also contains over 1200 dye samples that were created using Oklahoma native plants.

Administrative History

Botany has been present at Oklahoma A&M College/Oklahoma State University since near the beginning of the University’s history. In 1920 the Herbarium, which is currently run by the department, was established. The department is also connected to the McPherson Botanical Reserve, which is situated 8 miles east of Stillwater. In addition, the department is involved with the Oklahoma Plant Biotechnology Network that incorporates the cooperative work of biological sciences departments at OSU, the University of Oklahoma, and efforts of the Noble Foundation. Until 1990 the department was called the Botany and Biochemistry Department, when Biochemistry separated into its own department. Currently, Botany is in the College of Arts and Sciences. Paula Shryock wrote a brief history of the department which resides in the collection’s data file.
