Administrative History

The Department of Agronomy at Oklahoma A&M College (OAMC), established in 1906, was housed briefly in the basement of Old Central and then moved to Morrill Hall. In 1915 Dr. Wallace Macfarlane became the first agronomy faculty with an earned PhD. The Oklahoma Seed Growers Association became the Oklahoma Crop Improvement Association in 1922, the same year that the first M.S. in Agronomy was awarded. The department name was changed to Field Crops and Soils in 1926 and moved to the 3rd floor of Whitehurst – the top floor at the time. In 1931 the departmental name reverted back to Agronomy, and in 1957 the first PhD in Agronomy was awarded. In 1979 the Oklahoma Crop Improvement Association was changed to Oklahoma Pedigreed Seed Services. In 1997 the name of the department was changed to Plant and Soil Sciences (PASS)
