Scope and Contents

Collection contain reminiscence, photographs, correspondence, safe conduct pass, discharge order, and newspaper clipping relating to John Edward Langwig’s experiences in World War II. Nazi German military helmet and swastika flag are from a mayor’s office in a town in Bavaria that was liberated by Langwig’s battalion during WWII.

Biographical Note

John E. Langwig (1924-2010) was inducted into the United States Army on January 15, 1943 and was given an honorable discharge on December 7, 1945. He served with the 90th Chemical Mortar Battalion in central Europe in 1944 and 1945, attaining the rank of sergeant and the position of squad leader. On August 31, 1946, he married Jackie Kirk Langwig. Langwig received his B.S. from the University of Michigan, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from SUNY College of Forestry. He first came to Oklahoma State University in 1971 and was head of the Forestry Department from 1975-1981. He retired in 1986.
