Biographical Sketch
Samuel Hubert Woods, Jr. (1926-1994) was born in Ardmore, OK, graduated from Tulsa Central High School (1943), attended the University of Oklahoma (1943-1945), graduated cum laude from Harvard (A.B., 1947), received his M.A. from Harvard (1949), and Ph.D. from Yale (1956). He taught at the University of Colorado (1949-51), Duke (1954-55), and Rutgers (1955-56). In 1956, he became an Instructor in English at Oklahoma State University, and eventually attained the rank of Professor in 1965. Woods retired in 1982. He specialized in eighteenth-century British literature, specifically Oliver Goldsmith, but also taught twentieth-century English and American literature and literary theory. At OSU, Woods served on the Faculty Council (1963-68, Chairman, 1968-69) and also on the Graduate Council (1970-72). He published two textbooks: Introduction to Literature (1968, with Mary Rohrberger) and Reading and Writing about Literature (1971, with Mary Rohrberger). He also published Oliver Goldsmith: A Reference Guide (1982), book reviews, and articles on Goldsmith, J.R.R. Tolkien, and John Crowe Ransom. He was completing a literary biography of Goldsmith at the time of his death.
