Administrative History

Fort Gibson was established in 1824 near the Grand River to maintain order and expedite the policy of Indian Removal. Enclosed by a ten-foot stockade were 39 one-story log buildings, ten two-story buildings, two log blockhouses, a stone powder house and a dug well. It was abandoned in 1857 but was re-occupied in 1861 as headquarters of the Confederates Indian Department. In 1862, Union forces occupied it and renamed it Fort Blunt. After the war, the fort served as depot for Quartermaster Corps and was reoccupied to curtail introduction of liquor and other undesirable elements in Indian Territory. By 1897, the barracks were uninhabitable, troops camped on the parade ground, and it was permanently abandoned. The Oklahoma Historical Society reconstructed the fort in 1936.

Sam Houston, an adopted member of the Cherokee tribe, moved to Indian Territory, settling near Fort Gibson, in 1829 after resigning as governor of Tennessee. In 1832 he left for Texas.
