Scope and Contents

Collection contains three interviews of Wilma Mankiller (1945-2010).

One interview took place March 20, 1986. Interviewers were Margaret Nelson and Nuala Archer, who were both faculty members in the English Department. Transcribed by Jill Holmes, librarian at Edmon Low Library. Subjects include Mankiller’s family, her growing up in Adair County, Oklahoma, relocation to California, marriage and divorce, return to Oklahoma, and her illness (muscular dystrophy).

The second interview took place May 8, 1991, and was done for an Oklahoma State University graduate seminar taught by Stephen Hinds. This talk provided an overview of past tribal-federal relationships and the present independent manangement of tribal economy. She also talked about her consideration of the appropriate role of the federal government and Indian tribes in higher education and in economic development.

The third interview, which does have a transcript available, was conducted on April 13, 1989 and was done as a part of the Angie Debo Native American Lecture series.
