Scope and Contents

Collection contains Lawrence Boger's personal papers, published papers, books, and various types of publications documenting his varied interests, desk and personal calendars, artifacts, photographs, slides and other audio visual materials. The principal areas of interest covered in these papers are agricultural economics, banking cooperatives, Kirksville Osteopathic College, Oklahoma State University along with its foundation, governing board, College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Michigan State University. A large portion of the collection concerns Boger’s files documenting his daily activities including travels. Reports and files from his service with the board of organizations such as Bank for Cooperatives, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Oklahoma State University Foundation, Stillwater, Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce United Way, 4-H, and many other activities. The files cover his academic and retirement years until his death, with the bulk beginning in the 1960s until the 1990s.

Biographical Sketch

Lawrence LeRoy Boger was born September 23, 1923 in DeKalb County, Indiana. He pursued his advanced education at Michigan State University, University of Chicago, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana and Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts in the in agricultural economics and civil engineering. In 1945 he married Frances June Wilbur and had a son and daughter. During his years at Michigan State University, he moved from a graduate assistant in 1947 to Instructor, Professor, to Department Chair to Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources then to Provost in 1976. In 1977 he became President of Oklahoma State University and served for 11 years. Boger served in World War II from May 1941 to November 1945 after receiving a medical discharge after being wounded in action. Boger chaired and served on boards of various professional, civic, and social organizations. Many of his publications were concerned with agricultural economics. After Boger’s retirement as President of OSU in 1988 he continued to be active in OSU and Stillwater activities. After an illness he died in May 24, 2001.
