Administrative History

The International Federation of Home Economics established its headquarters in Fribourg, Switzerland in September 1908. The First Congress was also held that year. Monsieur Georges Python, the founder and first president, “believed that such an organization “should be the best way to Internationalism” and the means for all interested in human dignity to join their efforts.” In 1949 the first sizable group of members of the American Home Economics Association attended the Congress held in Stockholm. Reorganization of the federation occurred in 1954 when the headquarters moved to Paris. Maryland was the site of the 1958 Congress and marked the first to be lead by a woman president and the first meeting in North America. The federation has continued to develop and progress

Lela O’Toole, Dean of Home Economics at OSU from 1951 to 1975, served on the executive council and as Vice President of IFHE.
