Henry L. Bellmon Photographs Collection
Scope and Contents
Photographs from all of the Henry L. Bellmon collections (80-004, 92-003, 95-003) have been combined in one collection. The bulk of the photographic collection consists of black and white photographs from Bellmon’s Senate years. Many of the photos are file copies and are marked as such. There are also photographs from the second gubernatorial term.
Photographs are arranged in topical order, with identification of those in the photo as possible. There are 1218 photos, slides, two reels of 16 mm film, a framed photo and miscellaneous negatives in the collection.

Biographical Sketch
Henry L. Bellmon, born near Tonkawa, Oklahoma in 1921, attended elementary and secondary school in Noble County. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M College in 1942 with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. Following graduation, Bellmon enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served 40 months during WWII. Bellmon participated in four battles of the Pacific campaign. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for action in an invasion of Saipan and the Silver Star for Bravery in the Iwo Jima invasion.
After his military service, Henry Bellmon returned to Billings. In 1946 he was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives where he served one term. He was elected the first Republican governor of Oklahoma (1963-1967), U.S. Senator (1969-1980), and later to a second gubernatorial term (1987-1991). During his second term as U.S. Senator, Bellmon was the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee. He has also served on numerous commissions and boards.
Henry Bellmon has taught classes at Oklahoma City University, Central State University (now the University of Central Oklahoma), the University of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State University.
Henry Bellmon married Shirley Osborn January 24, 1947. They have three daughters, Patricia, Gail and Ann.
