Administrative History

In 1914 the department of Zoology and Botany was formed at Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University). Since that time the Zoology department has changed named several times as the university reorganized departments and schools. In 1948 the Oklahoma Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit joined the department. Several years later, in 1966, the Fisheries Unit was formed. The department was also instrumental in forming the OSU Museum of Natural and Cultural History.

R. O. Whitenton joined the faculty in 1913. When Zoology became a separate administrative unit, he was appointed head of the department. Dr. Whitenton held this position until his retirement in 1949. Under Dr. Whitenton’s guidance the department developed general zoology courses, parasitology, genetics and evolution, and embryology. He also expanded course offerings for non-science majors.
