Administrative History

Even before a department or school developed, journalism was important to Oklahoma State University. Freeman E. Miller served as the first director of the College Press Bureau and was the supervisor for the student newspaper, Oklahoma A and M College Mirror. Journalism began as part of the English department. In 1937 Journalism split from English to become a separate department and later a school. The School of Journalism and Broadcasting was formed in 1970. The 2010 name change “ more accurately describes the mission and curriculum changes ahead at the school as the result of input from alumni and the industry. The existing degrees of a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science in journalism and broadcasting will be replaced with a bachelor of arts or science with options in multimedia journalism, sports media or strategic communication.”

Name changes: English and Journalism, 1923-1936 Technical Journalism, 1937-1958 School of Journalism, 1963-1970 School of Journalism and Broadcasting, 1971-2010 School of Media and Strategic Communications 2010-
