Scope and Contents

Collection contains approximately 400 mostly handwritten (some typed) letters primarily between Bernard Alexander Kellner (b. 1892) and his wife, Ruth Dorcas Greenlee (Kellner) (b. 1898). Correspondence dates from World War I when their courtship began to their marriage June 14, 1920; starts again during WWII (1941-1946) and continues during the Korean War (1951-1952). Later correspondence includes their children. Subjects include daily events such as Greenlee's teaching assignments or duties, family matters, influenza and polio epidemics, weather, wartime costs and rationing and local and national events.

Biographical Sketch

Kellner, whose family came from Vici, OK, in Dewey County, was a teacher and school administrator in Oklahoma and served in the U.S. Army during WWI, WWII and the Korean War, stationed in the military, among other places at Ft. Sill (Lawton, OK) and New York, and eventually attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. Ruth Greenlee graduated from Northwestern State Normal School in Alva, Oklahoma, and taught public school in Oklahoma, including Pawnee and Alva.
