Administrative History

The Art Department at Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) grew out of the department of drawing and art within the School of Domestic Science and Arts. In 1924, Doel Reed took over as department head. Reed probably had the most distinguished reputation of any of Oklahoma A&M College’s faculty; his works were published and exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Paris Exposition. He revived the technique of aquatint, a form of etching. During his career, he exhibited in 350 juried shows, winning 41 firsts. F.M. Bartlett and Helen L. Bartlett made a generous donation for the renovation of Gardiner Hall. Mrs. Bartlett majored in art and studied with Doel Reed. The building was renamed the Bartlett Center for Studio Arts.
