Administrative History

Courses in Chemistry existed at Oklahoma A&M since the school’s inception. With the help of Professor George L. Holter, a chemistry major, was introduced in 1898 and it quickly became one of the most popular majors on campus. A graduate program was added in 1914. By 1919, Hilton Jones, the new department head, secured support for an Oklahoma chapter of the American Chemical Society to be headquartered at Oklahoma A&M. In 1946, the department added its Ph.D. program. The Department of Chemistry has been affiliated with the School of Arts and Sciences (and its successors) since 1914. For ten years beginning in 1935, Chemistry and Geology combined to form one department within the School of Arts and Sciences.
