Collection contains correspondence, publications, legislation, reports, surveys, speeches, photographs and maps, related to water resource management in east central Oklahoma and in particular the Arkansas River, Robert S. Kerr Lake, Eufaula Dam and Reservoir, and also the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Biographical Sketch

Donald O. McBride (1903-1978), Professional Engineer, assistant to former Oklahoma Senator Robert S. Kerr, one of the three directors of the TVA from 1966-1975, and primary force behind the Arkansas Basin Development Association.

Robert S.Kerr (1896-1963) Governor of Oklahoma 1943 - 1947; U.S. Senator, 1948-1966; and cofounder and partner of Kerr McGee Oil Industries. The 1943 floods of the Arkansas, Grand, and Verdigris Rivers impressed on him the need for flood control. He joined with the Arkansas governor to form the Arkansas - Oklahoma Interstate Water Resources Committee, Donald O. McBride was a member. Their plan for flood control, irrigation, hydroelectric and navigation projects was put on hold during WW II but in 1946 Congress authorized $55 million for multipurpose development of the Arkansas River. In 1956 he secured funds that would finish the Arkansas River Project. While serving as U.S. Senator from Oklahoma, Kerr died suddenly on Jan. 1, 1963 of a heart attack.
