Administrative History

From the founding of Oklahoma A&M College in 1890, physical education was a requirement for students through the Physical Education Department, while the intercollegiate sports were independently pursued avidly and successfully. The intercollegiate sports were ultimately coached and organized through the Athletics Department. The Athletics Department was officially formed in 1913. Many of the initial Athletic Directors were recommended by the Athletic Cabinet, previously the Athletics Council, through 1968 and approved by the Board of Regents. More recently the Board of Regents approves and announces the new Athletic Directors. Their decisions are usually made from the candidate chosen and recommended by the President and his search committee and have been approved so far. The Athletics Department, with the approval of the Athletic Cabinet or Council initially, was part of the Intercollegiate Conferences listed below.
