Administrative History

The Office of International Programs was organized under Vice President Randall T. Klemme in 1952 to provide support, continuity, and stability to international projects at Oklahoma State University initially for the Ethiopian Project. In addition, the Office of International Programs served as the official university office to help initiate and coordinate OSU’s international projects and promotes international activities and intercultural awareness on campus. A notable example of these projects was the creation of the English Language Institute with the Department of Foreign Languages. Other programs that were administered or received consultation included the agricultural education program, home economics in Pakistan, a veterinary program in Guatemala, interdisciplinary studies programs for developing areas of the world including Latin America, Africa, and East Asia, and World Campus Afloat. The first director of the Office of International Programs was William S. Abbott who held the office until retiring in 1992. Arthur Klatt was named Interim Director and then appointed Director in 1993. In the early part of 1998, the Office of International Programs was integrated into the School of International Studies.
