Administrative History

“The Department of Sociology and Rural Life, established as a separate unit in 1927. Sociology had developed as a discipline in the early twenties from roots in agricultural economics. The Pernell Act of 1925, permitting experiment station research money to include social science research stimulated sociology’s development. At Oklahoma A. & M., it moved from the School of Agriculture to the School of Commerce as the Department of Economics and Sociology in 1928.” (Centennial Histories: Arts & Science, p. 130) Otis D. Duncan came to Oklahoma A&M College in 1929 and became head when Sociology became a department in 1937. During the 1940s social science courses were faced with difficulties in finding a home and were divided among several departments. Schiller Scroggs, Dean of Arts and Sciences, was a strong influence in the development of the social sciences between 1935 and 1957. In 1929 Sociology was part of the Department of Economics. In 1963 after the retirement of Duncan, the department moved from the College of Agriculture to Arts and Sciences.
