Administrative History

The Cherokee Male and Female Seminaries were boarding schools that were opened by the tribal government in 1851. The Male Seminary was southwest of Tahlequah, Indian Territory, and the Female Seminary was north of Park Hill. The schools provided academically rigorous curricula, but neither school offered any instruction in Cherokee lagnauge, culture, or history. The Civil War caused the plan to reopen the seminaries after the tribe's 1856 financial problems to be postponed until the 1870s. The Female Seminary burned in 1887, and reopened in 1889 north of Tahlequah. The Male Seminary burned in 1910, several years after the state began to reduce the tribal government's authority. The last students to earn degrees at the National Seminaries graduated in 1910 at a ceremony held in the Northeastern Normal School.
