Scope and Contents

Collection contains the papers of Peter C. Rollins, including correspondence with other academics concerning research, reviews, editing and many topics concerning popular culture. Copies of essays both drafts and final versions are covered with many of his publication. There are reviews of publications written by and about Rollin’s writings. Many of the original publications reviewed by Rollins are included in their prepublication form. Programs, information on organization of conferences, and proposed sessions for the Popular Culture Association, the American Culture Association, and the American Historical Association are included. Research and background materials for his English classes are included. Photographs cover many of the films involved in Rollin’s publications or classes. Computer disks, microfilm, posters, video and audio cassettes are also part of the collection

The collection was processed in two major efforts. During the first processing, materials were described to the folder level. The second effort came after Dr. Rollins retired using minimal processing standards as a guide. The original folder were kept, the materials were only grouped into major subject categories and described only by the general contents of the box. Boxes with more than one subject may be listed under more than one heading. Duplicates were removed along with student materials and writing by other authors unless they were edited by Rollins. Books were placed in the Main Library’s collection except when containing marginalia. The books with marginalia are in a separate series. Periodicals, pamphlets, brochures were kept only when important to the subjects areas of the collection and not otherwise available in the Library.

The collection is open for research use. Biographical Sketch

Dr. Peter C. Rollins (1942-2015), Regents Professor of English, taught at Oklahoma State University from 1974 until he retired in August of 2007. Rollins attended Dartmouth College and transferred to Harvard at the end of his sophomore year to complete the program titled History and Literature. After graduation he enlisted into the Marine Corps. Upon completion of his military service, Rollins returned to Harvard for graduate school and completed his PhD. An author, editor, reviewer and conference organizer, Rollins was involved in many aspects of academia. He served as editor of the journals Journal of Popular Culture, Journal of American Culture, and Film & History. Rollin’s interests in history and popular culture as depicted in film are reflected in the topics covered in this collection covering such topics as: WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, the U. S. Presidency and the White House, Will Rogers, and the portrayal of Cowboys and Indians in Hollywood. Rollins was also active in creating conferences for and participating in the Popular Culture Association and the American Culture Association. He made seven historical film documentaries dealing with the diverse topics of war, media, and Will Rogers. Rollins also edited a festschrift for David Berkeley, professor of the OSU English Department.
