Administrative History

KOSU began broadcasting December 29, 1955 as KAMC and was Oklahoma’s first public radio station. On February 8, 1959 it began daily broadcasting at 91.7 megacycles. Shortly after this switch the Federal Communications Commission approved KOSU-FM as the station’s call letters. Started as a student training program in broadcast journalism, in the 1980s it began to be recognized regionally, nationally, and internationally as a leader in broadcast journalism excellence. In 1985 KOSU was the recipient of the duPont-Columbia Award, considered the Pulitzer Prize of broadcast journalism. KOSU was the first university radio station in the U.S. to win this award.
