Scope and Contents

Collection contains minutes, agendas, correspondence, membership lists, and new program requests. Minutes for the Oklahoma State University Graduate Council and Graduate Faculty and new program requests are interfiled in most cases.

Arranged chronologically within each series. The series are minutes and requests for new programs for the Graduate College and minutes and membership lists for each of the five subject areas. The bulk of the collection is the Minutes of the Graduate Council and Graduate Faculty. Requests for new programs are frequently included with minutes and were not separated.

Administrative History

At Oklahoma A&M College, The Committee on Courses from 1910-1914 directed the work of graduate students. The Post Graduate Committee was formed in 1914. Renamed the Committee on Higher Degrees, the Committee was in charge of the graduate program until 1929. At this time the Graduate College was formalized. The Committee on Higher Degrees was responsible for the administrative functions of the graduate program. This committee was later renamed the Graduate Council. This Graduate Council was composed of a representative of each of the six undergraduate schools until 1948 when the graduate faculty reorganized into five subject matter groups. The Groups were Group I: Biological Sciences, Group II: Humanities, Group III: Physical and applied Physical Sciences, Group IV: Social Science, Group V: Teacher Education. The Graduate Council is composed of representatives of each group. The Dean of the Graduate School serves as chair of the Graduate Council. The Deans who have served the college are: 1929-1953 Daniel C. McIntosh, 1953-1965 Robert W. MacVicar, 1965-66 James H. Boggs, 1966-1991 Norman N. Durham, 1992-1998 Thomas C. Collins, 1999-2000 Wayne Powell, 2001-present Timothy J. Pettibone.
