Administrative History

Collection contains material prepared by the faculty of OSU in the effort to obtain a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, an honorary society for liberal arts majors. Early attempts were made in 1933 and 1961. The attempt in the early 1970’s failed because the Phi Beta Kappa Qualification Committee found that OSU administration was under censure from the American Association of University Professors. In the late 1970’s, the Committee did not consider OSU due to the recent change of Presidents. The attempt in 1980 resulted in a visit to the campus by the Qualification Committee. The comments were numerous including “heavy teaching load, large class size, excessive use of graduate assistants in English composition and American government classes, uneven quality of the honors program, decline in the number of B.A. degrees, diminished support for the library and “an alleged regard of the college by the higher administration as a ‘service’ agency.” (Arts & Sciences: Centennial Histories Series, p. 417). The latest attempt included in this collection was made in 2000 but no results of the application are included.
