(Mamie) Hammonds concerning establishment of chapters of the Women’s Ku Klux Klan in Oklahoma (bulk), correspondence from Mrs. Hammonds and a document defending herself and Governor Johnston concerning charges from the impeachment of Governor Johnston.

Biographical Sketch

Mrs. Hammonds was born June 7, 1887, in Arkansas and educated in Arkansas and Tennessee. In WWI she served as chairman of the 4th Liberty Loan and worked with food conservation commission, Red Cross and the French War Orphan Fund. In the early 1920s she was an organizer for Women of the Klu Klux Klan in Oklahoma From 1927 – 29 she served as confidential secretary to Governor Henry S. Johnston. Hammonds resigned as Johnston’s secretary in Feb. 1929 during his second impeachment trial. She later became an insurance agent with Mid-continent Life Insurance Co. In 1931 she left Oklahoma to sell leases in the gas fields of East Texas. Hammonds died Feb. 16, 1962.
