Collection contains published poetry, magazine and newspaper articles, and a book. Also included are unpublished poems and short stories and an unpublished book-length manuscript entitled, A Permanent Home. The thematic focus of the writing is life in western Oklahoma during the 1930s and 1940s including the Dust Bowl period.

Biographical Sketch

Barbara Jean Hinkle Bockelman was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1927. Her grandmother and her grandmother’s second husband raised her from the age of 18 months old. In 1932 She came to Oklahoma with her grandparents. In 1936 they settled on the land that the Bockelman’s home today is on near Slapout, Beaver County, Oklahoma.

She attended Laverne High School in Harper County and married Vernor Bockelman in 1945. They had four children. When her youngest child was a year and a half old she began work on her college degree and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in language arts and journalism education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. Mrs. Bockelman also pursued additional study at the University of Oklahoma’s School of Professional Writing. She taught language arts and journalism for 13 years at Laverne High School and served as the school newspaper and yearbook advisor.

Mrs. Bockelman has interviewed many local residents about their experiences in the Dust Bowl and about life in the Oklahoma Panhandle. She is a published writer and cowboy poet. In November 2001, she and her husband participated in the OSU Library’s oral history project focusing on Oklahoma women’s experiences in the Dust Bowl.
