Scope and Contents

Collection contains photocopied newspaper articles documenting Miles-LaGrange’s career as Oklahoma Girls’ State Governor, Oklahoma State Senator, and U.S. District Attorney for the Western Oklahoma District. Also included are copies of Miles-LaGrange’s non-judicial writings, her 2002 nomination to the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame, and some records of her service on international judicial committees.

Biographical Sketch

Vicki Miles-LaGrange is a United States District Judge for the Western District of Oklahoma. She is the first African-American federal judge in the six states, which make up the Tenth Circuit. Judge Miles-LaGrange was the first woman United States Attorney in Oklahoma and among the first in the nation. President Bill Clinton also appointed her to the federal bench, which is a lifetime appointment.

Judge Miles-LaGrange was the first African-American female elected to the Oklahoma State Senate in August 1996, an office she held until her appointment to the federal bench in 1993. While in the State Senate she chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus and the Law and Justice Committee of the National Conference of State Legislators.
