Biographical Sketch
Gilstrap received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during WWI. He served as a bugler in Company B, 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Division. The DSC was awarded for his actions near St. Etienne-sur-Marne, France, 8 October 1918. He assisted the wounded to shelter, carried messages from the battalion to the regiment's headquarters while under heavy enemy fire, and captured enemy soldiers, forcing them to help him get the wounded to shelter. During his duties, he was badly burnt by gas-shell fire and was evacuated to hospital. Gilstrap is the youngest recipient of the award, being 17 when it was awarded.
After the War, Gilstrap returned to the U.S. and attended Oklahoma A&M, receiving a degree in communications and marketing. He worked as a speech and history teacher at the Oklahoma Military Academy, and met and married Doris Hays. Gilstrap remained in service with the Oklahoma National Guard, and when World War II was imminent, he was called to service by joining the staff of General William S. Key. Gilstrap went overseas to England and served as the executive officer on Keys' staff, following him to Iceland Base Command. Gilstrap retired from the military at Iceland Base Command in 1945 with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Upon retiring from the military, Gilstrap returned to Oklahoma A&M and taught speech until his retirement in 1965. Gilstrap passed away in 1987. He was inducted into OK Military Hall of Fame in 2004.
