Biographical Sketch

James Harlow "Jay" Boggs, Jr. (1921-2009) graduated from Oklahoma A&M College (OAMC) with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical option in 1943, and his MS in 1948. He received a Ph.D. in thermodynamics and heat transfer from Purdue University in 1953.

After graduating from OAMC in 1943, he began teaching as an instructor in OAMC's Mechanical Engineering department that same year, but was interrupted by his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. AFter the war, he and his wife, Jimmie Lea (Evans) Boggs, returned to Stillwater. Boggs became the Head of OAMC's School of Mechanical Engineering, and then Dean of the Graduate College before becoming the Vice President of Academic Affairs, a position he held for 25 years.

During his time as VP of Academic Affairs, he established many institutions and centers at OAMC (now Oklahoma State University), including the Environmental Institute and Water Research Center, the University Center for Energy Research, and the University Center for Laser Research. Many other programs and organizations at Oklahoma State University are the result of his term as Vice President, including the Office of Institutional Research, the University Center for Effective Instruction, the Department of Computer Science, the University Studies Degree Program, and the University Honors Program.
