Administrative History

The Pioneer Woman statue was the brainchild of Ernest Whitworth Marland, who was a lawyer and oil businessman in Pennsylvania and Oklahoma, and an Oklahoma politician. He commissioned the statue to honor the pioneer women who settled the West. Holding a competition to see which design would be chosen, he paid 12 well-known sculptors to design a model of the statue they would build. The twelve models went on a nation wide tour in 1927, and the winner was designed by scupltor Bryant Baker. Baker received commissions from Queen Alexandra to sculpt busts of Edward VII and of Prince Olaf of Norway. He also sculpted busts of 5 Presidents and other famous Americans.

The Pioneer Woman statue was unveiled on April 22, 1930. It is located in Pioneer Woman State Park in Ponca City, Oklahoma. On September 16, 1958, the state of Oklahoma opened the Pioneer Woman Museum, which is adjacent to the statue.
