Administrative History

The oral histories in the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project Collection preserves the voices and experiences of women who have played a role in Oklahoma politics and Oklahoma history. Since Oklahoma statehood less than 100 women have served in the Oklahoma legislature and little has been written about these women. The goals of the project are to record their stories and fill a gap in primary source documents concerning women in politics in Oklahoma, to collect and preserve original and/or copies of photographs, memorabilia, and other historical evidence of Oklahoma female legislators and to provide a venue for increasing awareness of the success of these women by collecting, preserving, and making information about them fully accessible to scholars, researchers, and other interested persons.

Dr. Tanya Finchum is as Associate Professor/Librarian at the Oklahoma State University Library and Principal Investigator for this project. She has attended the Regional Oral History Institute at the University of California at Berkeley and was awarded a Big XII Faculty Fellowship to spend time at Baylor University Institute for Oral History observing their program. She received her MSLS from The University of Tennessee and her doctorate in Human Development and Family Science from Oklahoma State University.
