Biographical Sketch

Jack Rodney Harlan (1917-1998) earned his Ph.D. in genetics from the University of California in 1942. He worked for the USDA from 1942-1951, breeding forage crops and improving the grazing quality of rangelands in Oklahoma. He became a professor of Agronomy at Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) in 1951. After refusing to sign a loyalty oath, Harlan moved from Oklahoma State University to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he co-founded the Crop Evolution Laboratory in 1966.
