Biographical Sketch

Henry Garland Bennett was born December 14, 1886 in Nevada County, Arkansas. He graduated from Ouachita College, and went on to become the president of the Southeastern State Normal School (Southeastern Oklahoma State University) in 1919. He received his master's degree from Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (OAMC) in 1924 and his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1928. He married Vera Pearl Connell on January 23, 1919. The couple had five children.

In 1928, Bennett was appointed President of OAMC, now Oklahoma State University. He immediately implemented his "twenty-five year plan" and by 1951, the college had tripled its enrollment to 12,000, and had a campus valued at over 50 million dollars. In 1950, President Truman selected Bennett to direct the Four Point Program. On an inspection tour for the program, Bennett and his wife were killed when their plane crashed near Tehran, Iran on December 22, 1951.
